In the midst of completing and releasing their self-titled masterpiece in 2005, Collett resumed his solo career. Idols of Exile picks up where the bittersweet melodies of Motor Motel Love Songs left off. Album opener Fire sets the mood with its laid-back acoustic guitars and golden-toned harmonies. Collett sweetly sings, The good morning comes like a hit and run. Despite his words packing such a punch from the start, these songs are much more relaxed and inviting. Listen free to Jason Collett Idols of Exile Fire, Hangover Days and more. 12 tracks 45:57. The album features performances from many of Jason's closest friends including most of the Broken Social Scene Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff and extended Broken Social Scene Metric's Emily Haines and James Shaw Stars' Amy Millan and Evan Cranley Apostle Of Hustle's Andrew Whiteman and Julian Brown Do Make Say Think's Charles Spearin and F. The challenge Jason Collett faced on his first offering for Arts & Crafts was to establish a clear artistic identity independent of his contributions to what is, both literally and figuratively, one of Canadas biggest indie acts, Broken Social Scene. On the whole, though, Idols of Exile proves that Collett need not resort to stunt-writing. Many members of that. There are 12 distinct songs on Idols Of Exile, united by Collett's light touch and sense of snap. Read full review. Predictably, Idols of Exile is fleshed out by a revolving cast of Arts & Crafts regulars. Amy Millan and Kevin Drew contribute harmonies to Fire, which uses grandiose symbols to allude to basic longings, a shivering synth and a variety of chiming rhythmic elements buffeting Collett's voice as it breaks like Jeff Tweedy's: I know you just want to be on fire. Over the course of Idols of Exile, the classic rock idiom that Collett helps to dismantle with Broken Social Scene is reassembled piece by piece. The record humbly takes its place in history's queue: Perhaps not what BSS fans are looking for, but, weighed against the impulse for continuity instead of disjunction, deeply satisfying. Jason Collett is one of those breakout stars, and not surprisingly, he leans on his . buddies to help flesh out this 2005 release. Emily Haines adds a down-home casualness to duet Hangover Days Leslie Feist, Kevin Drew, Amy Millan and James Shaw also lend vocal support, while other fellow Canadians offer their own multi-instrumental talents
