Though Pavements sound and soul have been inextricably linked to the 90s, Stephen Malkmus solo career feels unmoored to any era. Removed from the zeitgeist and any real commercial expectations, Malkmus has settled into a comfortable routine of indulging whims, exploring rabbit holes, and generally making music just far enough removed from Pavements buzzy aloofness that nobody could accuse him of chasing past glories. Give or take a Real Emotional Trash, the approach has flattered him. Listen free to Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks Sparkle Hard. Sparkle Hard comes into focus slowly and stately, coalescing around crawling piano chords that soon get blown to bits by guitars - thereby offering a neat encapsulation of how this, the seventh album Stephen Malkmus has made since disbanding Pavement in 1999, walks a fine line between the familiar and the unexpected. Upon the first spin, Sparkle Hard seems to veer all over the place, bouncing from the finely etched pop of Future Suite to the Teutonic jam of Bike Lane, eventually winding up on the country-rock ramble of Refute, a duet with Kim Gordon, who ha. Its Malkmus at his most straightforwardly graceful, strumming a folkie melody like a guy in his backyard figuring life out at his own easeful pace, balancing everyday worry time gets me and I wonder how to simplify with goofy sweet nothings kiss yourself metaphorically , capping it off with a aphoristic metoo toast: Men are scum, I cant denyMay. you be shitfaced the day you die. Deep into Sparkle Hard, during the eighth track Kite, Stephen Malkmus seems to break the fourth wall with an admission of vulnerability. Just right now. In a recent Washington Post interview, Malkmus talked about how his label Matador put the kibosh on an album of songs he sang over keyboards and a drum machine in favor or a more on-brand Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks record. Fortunately, Malkmus also happened to have the songs that would become Sparkle Hard in his back pocket

Does anyone else thing the black vinly (US Matadar) sounds terrible? To me its so flat sounding. The music, and album itself is fantastic....up there with his best.

Couldn’t agree more with I.Dig.Wax on this one. From the opening piano notes of Cast Off, Sparkle Hard promises to be a classic. And then it delivers.

Songs like Kite and Difficulties/Let Them Eat Vowels finally see Malkmus writing songs on an epic scale. Brethren and Solid Silk feature gorgeous string arrangements that evoke pastoral settings and carry a striking somberness. There are synth flourishes throughout the album that create a completely new and fresh sound for Malkmus. And I’d be remiss to leave out mention of the infamous vocoder performances. It’s silly, it’s playful, and then suddenly it will be jarring and dissonant.

The lyrics are flat-out stunning. For a songwriter with a penchant for clever lyricism to step up to an entirely new level speaks volumes of the quality on display. Malkmus is more relevant, thoughtful, and touching than ever here. Think less Dadaist and more Impressionist.

Simply put, this is a versatile, surprising, and stunning release. This is not just one of the best releases of Malkmus’s solo career (which I’ve always found just a little underwhelming in comparison to his past glories), but it easily contends with some of his Pavement releases as well. For serious.

Hopefully Sparkle Hard will be re-evaluated for the upcoming year-end lists, because it deserved much, much more love than it received. Major, major props to Malkmus for this one.
