Not surprising, since this band is a spin-off from Chicagoan white doom pioneers Trouble, with Eric Wagners otherworldly voice sounding wiser and more relaxed, but more authoritative and powerful than on The Skulls 2014 debut, For Those Which Are Asleep. There are subtle yet effective twin guitar harmonies conspicuous by their absence from the debut plus a tasteful dash of 60s psychprog eccentricity on From Myself Depart and All That Remains Is True, and if you think the thunderous drums pack a familiar wallop, youre right: ex-Cathedral skin-punisher Brian Dixon has at last found a. Not as good as their debut, but still a worthwhile Doom album in the mold of Trouble

Original Trouble singer Eric Wagner launched two new groups in 2014 with debut releases, The Skull and Blackfinger. Both bands are a doomish mix of Trouble, Ozzie-era Sabbath, The Doors, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, but The Skull are a little heavier whereas Blackfinger are mellower in a haunting way and arguably more experimental. Yet they’re both basically alternative Trouble bands with enough to separate them from Eric’s former band. One noticeable difference is that neither are as rockin’ as Trouble.

My favorite track on THE ENDLESS ROAD TURNS BLACK (2018) is easily “Ravenswood,” which features a notable vocal melody during the driving stanzas (that is, driving for doom metal). The melancholic ballad “All that Remains (is True)” is another highlight. Meanwhile “Breathing Underwater” features moody Doors-like acoustics morphing into Sabbathian riffs. And the closer “Thy Will be Done” sounds a lot like Trouble.

Like Blackfinger, The Skull is somehow invigorating, but lacks the similarities to My Dying Bride’s dirgey side. Both bands and their two albums harken back to those previously mentioned old bands, but they also have a timeless quality. The fact that the lyrics emphasize peace & hope amidst the most common struggles of life makes these discs even more refreshing.

Of course you have to be in the right mode for this style of arty, hopeful doom. The more you listen, however, the more you adapt and the more you appreciate.

The eight tracks clock-in at 44 minutes.
